So, you are a recovering alcoholic, past drug user or shopaholic?  How do you handle the high stress holidays, when everyone is offering you a drink, perhaps something to smoke, or even dragging you to the mall to shop?  Dee Christensen knows better than most – Dee is a writer, social advocate and founder of Recovery Wire Magazine. Starting from humble beginnings, she experienced a lifetime of challenges before her formative years came to a close. Poverty, abuse, alcoholism, and her first night in prison were some of the events that shaped her early life. While still in high school she lost a parent and entered the welfare system as a foster child. While her friends were entering college, she was living on the streets, taking shelter where she could among the violence, prostitution and street gangs. Arrested, and addicted to a lethal cocktail of chemical street drugs, she faced a bleak future.  dee1

Through a series of random circumstances, she ultimately found herself in a detox centre. She surrendered finally to the idea that perhaps there was more to life. She describes that first year in recovery as a kind of infancy: having to relearn how to properly speak, dress, walk, eat and sleep. One step after another, she would eventually land herself in university, studying criminology. She went on to graduate from the faculty of social work, earning an award for highest academic distinction. She later worked as an addictions counselor, which led to the idea of forming a magazine that could unite the broader recovery community. For every person who cheered her on during her voyage back to life, she works tirelessly to pay it forward to those still in need of a second chance.

Hear her story tonight, as well as tips and tools to get YOU thru the holidays!  And if you miss it, don’t forget it will be On Demand Thursday right here ==>
